Garma is the summer kharbooza: rough netted skin over orange flesh, and an aroma so strong a ripe one perfumes a kitchen through the rind. Judge it by smell at the stem end, not by looks. It is at its best in the fiercest weeks of the summer, which is exactly when it grows in the riverine belt, and it does not keep — buy it to eat within days.
